Spend the afternoon exploring the lively streets of Dar es Salaam, visit the fascinating Village Museum, or enjoy a swim in the hotel pool.
After an early start, drive to our camp in the national park. Saadani is the only wildlife park in the country that borders the sea, offering a unique combination of mainland and marine flora and fauna. Keep an eye out for lions padding along the salt flats, herds of buffalo traversing the savannah and elephants wandering through the scrub.
Enjoy a sunrise walking safari along the salt flats, following the footprints of animals that have crossed the flats during the night. Learn how to set up a camera trap to get the perfect wildlife shot (hopefully!) and take an evening game drive in search of lions and leopards.
Board a boat for a safari along the Wami River. Look out for beautiful feathery black and white Colobus monkeys watching us from the trees along the riverbanks and enormous hippos emerging from their mud wallows as the boat approaches.
Head to the beachside Simply Saadani camp, set on the Indian Ocean and surrounded by national park. After lunch in the beautiful sea-view restaurant, explore the Mafui Creek by canoe or hike through the bush trails surrounding the camp.
This morning we head to the sandbar for snorkeling and swimming followed by much and a canoe ride on the lodge's Mafui Creek. We'll also check the camera traps for any animal activity.
This morning after breakfast, head up to the local fishing village of Mkwaja on foot along the beach with your guide. See the school and a typical village house/shop as well as a visit to the hospital supported by the Tent With A View Foundation. After lunch, head over to the wildlife research centre for a talk on Tent With A View’s wildlife conservation projects including elephant collaring in Saadani.
Learn about life as a Maasai, including their clothes, hair and face paint, then have a lesson in how to speak some key Maasai phrases. After a dance lesson, dress up in traditional “Shuka” (Maasai blankets) and enjoy a Swahili barbecue party on the beach, where you can bust out some of your new dance moves.
Travel to the Madete marine park to learn about endangered Green Turtles and then compete in a fun quiz with our fellow travellers on everything we’ve learnt during the week.
After breakfast, return to Dar es Salaam where your Family Safari adventure will come to an end.
