Mauna Kea Beach Hotel remains committed to conservation. The resort donates a portion of every stay to the Hawaii Island Conservation Fund. And they continue to innovate when it comes to programs aimed at protecting one of America’s most celebrated archipelagos.
Efforts include coral reef restoration and the management and cultivation of honeybee hives to help pollinate local farms. At check-in, families can take the Pono Pledge, a promise made to explore the islands mindfully and with care. Situated along the Kohala Coast in Kaunaoa Bay, the hotel offers white sand beaches, luxurious accommodations, flavorful local cuisine, and much more.
Inkaterra, a Peruvian ecolodge pioneer, has been a driving force behind making Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel the first fully sustainable Latin American city in 2019. Efforts have included establishing the city’s first biodiesel and glycerin plant. This facility converts common vegetable oil into eco-friendly biodiesel.
In turn, the biodiesel fuels the 83-room hotel. The hotel itself is idyllic with its collection of mountainside casitas enveloped in a cloud forest not far from the ancient citadel of Machu Picchu. Besides exploring ancient Andean culture, the location is perfect for guided bird-watching treks, immersive cultural experiences, and visits to the Andean-inspired hotel spa, Unu.
In the Baa Atoll, a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve, you’ll find the 61-villa escape Soneva Fushi. Over the years, this resort has made impressive strides when it comes to sustainability. They include a decade-long record of carbon neutrality and the creation of a recycling and composting center that supports the resort’s “no waste” policy.
Innovative initiatives include transforming Styrofoam packaging into bricks used to build villas, glass waste repurposed for artisanal projects, and food waste composted for reuse in local gardens. What can you expect during your stay? Accommodations include the sophisticated, hilltop Singita Sasakwa Lodge. But for a walk on the wild side, opt for glamping at Singita Sabora Tented Camp. Either way, a portion of the funds from your stay will go towards the Grumeti Fund, which continues to spearhead conservation efforts that help critically endangered eastern black rhinos.
