ABOUT US
Iceland has officially earned one of the top spots on my travel list.
This was my first visit, and despite packing an incredible amount into six days, I left feeling like I had only scratched the surface. Traveling with my seven-year-old son, Miles, a dear friend, and her six-year-old, we explored Reykjavík, the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, the Golden Circle, the South Coast, glacier lagoons, and everything in between. The waterfalls, glaciers, volcanoes, and dramatic coastlines exceeded every expectation. And yet, as soon as I boarded my flight home, I was already thinking about returning—especially for the longer hikes and deeper wilderness experiences that simply require more time.
In just six days, we descended into lava caves beneath ancient volcanoes. We stood between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. We watched Strokkur geyser erupt into the air. We walked behind waterfalls, wandered black sand beaches, sailed among floating icebergs, soaked in geothermal waters, searched for puffins along rugged sea cliffs, and even stepped onto a glacier.
It was everything I hoped Iceland would be.
And yet, when I think about the trip, the memories that come to mind first have very little to do with the famous attractions.

Travel today is easier than ever.
You can book flights online. You can download maps. You can find recommendations on social media. You can create a perfectly good itinerary on your own.
But there is a difference between visiting a destination and understanding it.
That difference often comes down to one person: your guide.
Our guide, Johann, was one of those rare people who doesn’t simply show you a place—he helps you experience it.
Throughout the week, he shared stories about Iceland’s history, culture, geology, and folklore. Every lava field, waterfall, and fishing village suddenly had context and meaning.
Instead of checking off attractions, we felt connected to the country.

Some of our favorite memories weren’t on any must-see list.
One morning, we hiked into a hidden canyon carved into emerald-green cliffs. The trail involves scrambling over rocks and crossing shallow streams. With two six- and seven-year-olds in our group, it could have been a challenge.
Instead, it became an adventure.
When the trail got more challenging, Johann stepped in without hesitation, helping—and sometimes carrying—the kids through sections of the canyon so they could reach the magical waterfall hidden inside.
Another highlight was a guided glacier walk. Standing on ancient ice, surrounded by crevasses and dramatic mountain scenery, was one of those experiences that reminds you how powerful nature can be. For the kids, it felt like stepping into another world. For the adults, it was equally awe-inspiring.
Johann also knew exactly where to find puffins nesting along the cliffs and shared stories that made us appreciate these remarkable birds beyond simply checking them off a wildlife list.
Then came one of the most memorable experiences of the trip: a visit to his family’s farm, which has been passed down through six generations. We met the animals, learned about modern Icelandic farming, and watched a robotic milking system at work.
For my son, that farm visit ranks right alongside glaciers and volcanoes.
And that’s exactly the point.

Of course, Iceland’s landscapes are extraordinary.
The Snæfellsnes Peninsula feels like several countries compressed into one day, with lava fields, black sand beaches, fishing villages, and dramatic coastal cliffs.
The Golden Circle delivers some of the country’s most iconic experiences, from Þingvellir National Park to Gullfoss waterfall and the geothermal wonders of Geysir. One of our favorite stops was a geothermal bakery, where bread is baked underground using the earth’s natural heat and unearthed fresh from the volcanic sand.
Along the South Coast, waterfalls seem to appear around every corner. Glaciers descend from distant mountains. Icebergs drift through glacier lagoons before washing ashore on Diamond Beach, sparkling like crystals against the black sand.
But what transformed these places from beautiful scenery into meaningful memories was having someone beside us who knew their stories.

As a family travel advisor, I’m constantly evaluating what elevates a trip from good to exceptional.
In Iceland, the answer was clear.
A great guide adapts to the interests and energy of your family. They know when to linger and when to move on. They understand local conditions, weather changes, hidden gems, and authentic experiences that rarely make it into guidebooks.
Most importantly, they create space for genuine connection.
For families traveling with children, that can make all the difference.

Today, when people ask me about Iceland, I tell them it’s one of the most spectacular destinations I’ve ever visited—and one that immediately made me want to return.
Next time, I’ll stay longer. I’ll tackle some of the hikes I didn’t have time for. I’ll venture farther into the highlands. I’ll spend more time exploring the country’s remote corners and immersing myself in the landscapes that captivated me from the moment I arrived.
But I’ll also tell them this:
The most important decision we made wasn’t which hotel to stay in or which attraction to visit.
It was choosing the right guide.
Because long after you’ve forgotten the names of the waterfalls, you’ll remember the people who helped you discover them.
The waterfalls, glaciers, puffins, and black sand beaches were incredible.
But Johann (or as the kids affectionally called him: Mr. Johann) is what made Iceland unforgettable.
