ABOUT US
When we are traveling, one of our kids’ favorite activities is playing at a local playground. I have to admit, I love this too.
From a cutlural immersion standpoint, it doesn’t get much better than letting your kids run, play and make friends with local kids. Whether visiting another country or just another town or city, a playground romp is a great way for kids to interact with other kids who may look or sound different.

Playgrounds also offer a great way to let kids use up some of their vast energy reserves. While checking out local neighborhoods, museums and cafes is an excellent learning opportunity, kids also just need a chance to let loose and have fun.
Up and down, up and down. A few slide trips will ensure the extra energy reserves are burned off and a good night’s sleep is in store.
Some playgrounds are worthy of being a travel destination, in and of themselves. We’ve seen photos of some very cool playgrounds around the world. If there is a particularly unique playground in the area you are visiting, you can make it part of your itinerary. Add it to your must-see list and then let your kids help find it on a map while en-route.
Madrid Rio is a destination playground. With its slide hill, tree jungle, ropes course and zip-line, to name a few, kids of all ages love it.
Playground time can also offer cultural immersion for parents. I’ve struck up countless conversations with other parents on the playground. I’ve not only met some really interesting people but have also gotten some valuable local recommendations.
Playgrounds also offer adults a chance to chat with locals (or each other) as well as a bit of “down time” without the kids even noticing. Have you spotted the relaxed, chatting duo in the background?
And, as much as kids need a break to run around and play, parents need a break to sit and relax. Lucky the parent who is traveling in Spain where there often are cafes with outdoor seating surrounding playgrounds. Kids play while parents enjoy a coffee, beer or glass of wine (and when traveling with kids, who doesn’t need at least one or the other?). Everyone is happy!
