ABOUT US
Did you know that bilingual kids have an easier time mastering new vocabulary? Or, that they’re better at problem-solving and developing reading skills? As researchers continue to uncover the benefits of second language acquisition, there’s never been a better time for raising bilingual children.
But what if you only speak one language? Does that mean your kids miss out on the benefits of multilingualism? Not at all! Here’s a plan of action for raising bilingual kids (even if you only speak one language.)
Hands down, one of the best benefits of raising a bilingual child is sharing in their adventure of learning. If you already speak a second language, then teaching your child and conversing with them regularly will help you maintain your proficiency.
If you’re monolingual, then you have the opportunity to learn a second language, too. After all, it’s never too late, and the brain-healthy benefits you’ll reap are enormous. For example, bilingual adults recover more quickly from strokes, and they see delayed onset of dementia by four to five years compared to their monolingual peers.
Yes, the research points to easier language acquisition in early childhood. But that doesn’t mean it’s impossible. Look at it as a fun challenge that will bring you and your child closer. It’s a wonderful investment in their future and yours as well.
When your child takes guitar lessons or ballet classes, you never have to form a chord or do a pirouette to assist them. But language learning is different. Languages require communication. Your child will thrive when you learn along with them. What’s more, you’ll be amazed at how quickly you can chat back and forth, gaining proficiency through regular practice.
But it’s also important that your kids reap the benefits of conversing with native speakers and peers whenever possible. How do you make this happen at home? Reach out to language clubs and groups in your area through Meetup, community boards, or local universities.
Ideally, find families with native-speaking children or families who are committed to raising bilingual kids, too. International students and adult speakers who are willing to spend some time with you and your little ones are another great option. You’ll be amazed by what you and your kids will pick up during conversational meetings and playdates.
What’s one of the best things about raising multilingual kids? Getting them excited about future travel. When you visit a country where they speak the language, your kids will soak up new vocabulary and expressions effortlessly. They’ll feel empowered and excited to learn more.
Speaking the native language of a place that you visit will also connect you and your kids to locals. You’ll interact with people you might otherwise never meet. And you’ll start to experience a destination like a local rather than a tourist.
Resources abound for bilingual kids. From computer programs and podcasts to YouTube videos and online curriculum, you’ll be amazed by the high-quality resources readily available. Bilingual and native language books remain great sources of learning, too, and they’ve never been easier to acquire through Amazon.
